The Real Cost of a Hitachi Excavator Boom: Why New Isn't Always the Smartest Bet

The OEM boom is designed for the worst-case, which is fine, but you pay for that safety margin regardless of your actual use.

To be fair, I get why people go with the cheapest option—budgets are real. But the hidden costs of a cheap aftermarket boom (like misaligned pin bores, poorer steel quality, or shorter service life) add up fast. For the Hitachi 180, a mid-tier aftermarket boom is usually the sweet spot.

If you're dealing with a custom job (like adding an extended reach boom for a demolition project), the decision changes entirely. In that case, a new OEM boom isn't even a direct option—you're into custom fabrication territory. Honestly, I'm not sure why more dealers don't offer spec-matched, pre-inspected used or remanufactured booms. It would solve a lot of the cost vs. reliability debate we see in the field.

That said, I recommend a new OEM boom for the Hitachi 180 if you need guaranteed dimensional accuracy to avoid downstream hydraulic cylinder alignment issues. If your machine has 8,000 hours on it and is paid off, and you just need to keep it working for another 1,000 hours, a quality reman or aftermarket boom is the better financial move. Here’s how to know if you might be in the 20% where aftermarket is a bad idea: if the machine is used for rental, where you have no control over operator abuse, stick with OEM. The warranty claim process is painless. With aftermarket, you're often on your own.
