Actually, they cost more because they're unpredictable and disrupt planned workflows. After getting burned twice by probably on time promises, we now budget for guaranteed delivery. When the cheapest option wins

Now the honest boundary: if your project has schedule flexibility, or you have a mechanic who can handle breakdowns, or the equipment is for occasional use, then cheapest can be rational. I'd do that for shop tools. Not for a machine that stops a six-person crew. The cost of downtime is usually larger than the premium you saved.
