Hitachi 340 vs Hitachi 245 Excavator Specs: A Buyer's Checklist

I manage equipment purchasing for a mid-sized excavation contractor. In the last five years, I've helped pick everything from compact excavators to a 40-ton machine, and I've probably looked at more spec-sheet PDFs than the dealers have. If you're comparing the Hitachi 340 excavator and the Hitachi 245, this checklist is the process I wish someone had given me before the first quote.

This is a practical checklist, not a brand review. It won't tell you to buy one model over the other. It will tell you what to verify, where to push back, and which small questions usually get skipped.

When to Use This Checklist

Use this when:

  • You're adding a 25-ton or 34-ton excavator to a rental fleet or a contracting fleet.
  • You're replacing an older machine that has reached the end of cost-effective repairs.
  • You're asking dealers for quotes and need one consistent way to compare machines.

There are seven steps, plus a short section on common mistakes. The last two steps—site power and concrete drilling—seem off-topic. They aren't.

Step 1: Match the Machine Class to Your Typical Work

The Hitachi ZX245 is roughly a 25-tonne excavator. The Hitachi ZX340 is roughly a 34-tonne machine. If your work is mostly utility trenches, smaller pipe runs, and sites with tight access, a 245 is probably the better fit. If you're moving larger volumes of earth, loading a 20-ton truck, or handling coarse material, a 340 will get the job done in far fewer passes.

Don't choose the bigger machine just because the price difference is smaller than you expected. To be fair, a 245 will do some 340 jobs—it will just be slower, and the wear will show up earlier.

Ask your operators: "What's the hang-up on your current jobs?" That answer matters more than any brochure.

Step 2: Get the Hitachi 340 Excavator Specs and the Hitachi 245 Excavator Specs From the Dealer, Not From Memory

I don't have hard data on how many buyers rely on old spec sheets, but based on our last purchase, I'd say more than half of us do. I caught myself comparing the 340's engine rating from a three-year-old PDF while the dealer had already updated the emission package. That mistake changes fuel burn and maintenance intervals.

Ask the dealer for the current spec sheet for both models. On the sheet, verify:

  • Operating weight with the bucket you're actually going to run
  • Net engine power at the flywheel
  • Max digging depth and max reach at ground level
  • Bucket and arm combinations
  • Ground bearing pressure if the machine will work on soft ground

Typical numbers I've seen from Hitachi dealer spec sheets in 2024 and 2025:

Hitachi ZX245LC-3 (approximate): 24,000-25,000 kg operating weight, 170-180 hp, 1.0-1.2 m³ bucket, max dig depth around 6.6-6.9 m.

Hitachi ZX340LC-3 (approximate): 34,000-35,000 kg operating weight, 250-260 hp, 1.5-1.7 m³ bucket, max dig depth around 7.5-7.7 m.

I wrote "approximate" for a reason. Exact numbers depend on the model suffix, the arm length, the undercarriage, and the spec sheet date. Verify current figures before you build a comparison spreadsheet. I want to say the exact bucket numbers on the last quote were 1.08 and 1.56 m³, but don't quote me on that.

Step 3: Compare Total Cost of Ownership, Not the Lowest Quote

This is where I've been burned, so I'll use myself as an example.

In 2022, a dealer quoted us $14,000 less than the next supplier for a machine in this same size class. The price was real. The machine wasn't a lemon. But the dealer's service department had one tech for every 40 machines in their territory. When the hydraulic control valve started leaking, repair turnaround took nine weeks. We rented a replacement for part of that time—about $7,500—and the rest of the time we juggled jobs around. The initial savings disappeared.

I wish I had tracked the full cost of that decision. What I can say anecdotally is that the lowest quote has cost us more than the second-lowest in most of the big purchases I've managed.

Use a simple total-cost list:

  1. Base price
  2. Delivery and rigging
  3. Commissioning (setup, fluids, inspection)
  4. First-year parts and maintenance
  5. Estimated dealer service response time
  6. Resale value after four or five years

The "cheapest" option is rarely on top after line 6.

Step 4: Check Parts and Service Before You Sign

Hitachi's global parts and service network is one of its strengths, but your local dealer is what matters when an excavator is down. Ask the dealer:

  • What's your current parts fill rate for common filters and seals?
  • How many technicians are on speed-dial for emergency repairs?
  • Do you carry a loaner or rental fleet for the 25-ton and 34-ton classes?
  • What's the lead time on a hydraulic cylinder or final drive?

Should mention: I've been told "we've got it covered" by three different dealers, and only one actually had the hydraulic cylinder in stock. I started asking for the part number before I believed the answer.

Step 5: Demo With the People Who'll Run It

Spec sheets are useful, but the operator's body knows things a PDF doesn't. We didn't have a formal demo process in 2021, and that cost us. The machine made sense on paper, but the operator spent a week complaining about the visibility and the seat position. In the end, it was fine. "Fine" isn't the goal.

Send the lead operator to a demo. Have them test:

  • Cab noise and vibration
  • Joystick response and fatigue over 30 minutes
  • Visibility to the left rear and to the bucket
  • How easy is it to check the hydraulic oil and filters?

That last one sounds minor. It isn't when a daily check is supposed to take five minutes and actually takes twenty.

Step 6: Plan for Site Power—A Propane Generator May Be Enough

Support equipment is the part of the buying process that gets skipped. If your jobsites are remote, you'll need power for lights, laptop chargers, maintenance tools, and sometimes a cement mixer. A propane generator is worth considering.

Why propane? It stores better than gasoline, doesn't go stale as quickly, and a 20 lb propane tank runs a small generator for hours. That said, propane generators are a little less efficient than gasoline for the same wattage, and the tanks get heavy when you're hauling them around.

Two practical tips:

  1. Add up the running watts before you pick a size. Lights, computer chargers, and a phone are small. A 1.5 hp concrete mixer can draw around 1,300-1,500 W. A heater or a compressor changes the math entirely.
  2. Don't put the generator next to a fuel source or inside a trailer. It burns fuel and needs ventilation. Verify current safety rules at your local authority.

This step isn't about the excavator itself. But a machine without site support is a costly paperweight.

Step 7: Learn How to Drill Into Concrete Before You Mount Anything

At some point after the excavator arrives, someone will drill into concrete to mount a charger, a GPS base station, a sign, or a workbench. If you don't do it right, you lose time and ruin a good masonry bit.

Here's the short version:

  1. Use a rotary hammer or a hammer drill with carbide-tipped masonry bits. A standard twist drill won't cut it.
  2. Start with a small pilot hole, then switch to the final bit size.
  3. Keep the drill straight and let the tool do the work. Pressing harder doesn't help.
  4. Pull out often to clear dust. If the bit isn't making dust, you're hitting aggregate or rebar. Reposition.
  5. For anchors, use the depth marked on the drill bit or a depth stop. Going too deep is as bad as not deep enough.

To be fair, this is a five-minute skill once someone shows you. But it's a twenty-minute frustration if you try to brute-force it. Same with buying the excavator: get the process right, and the work follows.

Common Mistakes I Still See Buyers Make

  • Comparing a new 340 to a used 245 and wondering why the price gap is small.
  • Ignoring transport cost. A 340 can need a heavier trailer and permits in some states. That can add thousands before the machine arrives.
  • Choosing by "best monthly payment" only. I get why people do it—budgets are real. But if the machine sits because of parts delays, the monthly payment is the least of your worries.
  • Forgetting operator training. A good operator can make a 245 outperform a 340. A bad operator can break both.

I don't have hard data on how many fleets buy without a demo. But in my experience, it's more than you'd think. Don't be one of them.

The Hitachi 340 and Hitachi 245 are both solid machines. The better choice is the one that fits your work, your service network, and your total cost. Everything else is just a brochure.
