Some jobs come with two weeks of forewarning. Most of mine don’t. In my role coordinating emergency equipment repairs and site work for a construction services company, I’ve handled 200+ rush orders in the past six years—including a call at 4:00 p.m. that had us drilling and setting anchors by 7:00 a.m. the next day. That’s why I use a checklist. Not because I don’t know the equipment. Because the price of forgetting one step goes straight to the client’s impression of us.
This checklist is for anyone who needs to drill into concrete fast and do it right the first time. It’s built around the Hitachi machines I see most often on small and mid-sized jobs: the EX200 excavator and the C12FDH miter saw. It also covers two things that seem unrelated until they stop a job—debris handling and weather.
Everything I’d read about concrete drilling said the process is simple: mark the hole, drill, set the anchor. In practice, the concrete is never that polite. So I treat the checklist as an equipment check, a technique check, and a setup check.

If your job uses an excavator to break concrete or lift a demolition hammer, the hydraulic system is the first thing to verify. - Drill at least 1/2” deeper than the anchor embedment depth. (Should mention: that extra depth gives the dust a place to go, and it’s how you get the anchor to seat fully.)
- When the bit starts to slow, pull it out and clear the dust. Let the hammer do the cutting; don’t lean on the drill.
- If you hit rebar, stop. Move the hole by at least 1.5x the bit diameter, or switch to a diamond core bit. The rebar isn’t the enemy—the unplanned metal is.
The numbers said the cheaper rotary hammer would be fine for the occasional anchor. My gut said no, and I bought the heavier model anyway. Three months later, we had a 40-anchor balcony railing job. The heavier hammer drilled every hole without bogging down. That was the day the budget drill went back to the toolbox for good.

Concrete drilling isn’t always the whole job. If you’re setting forms, cutting treated lumber, or building a temporary brace, the Hitachi C12FDH miter saw is usually the fastest way to get a clean cut. But a saw that isn’t ready costs time.

For small jobs, use a heavy-duty trash compactor bag and keep it off the wet concrete. Cement dust is not ordinary dust. It’s caustic and it never disappears from the air quickly. Wet dust should be handled as construction waste, not swept into storm drains.
Step 5: Use a Truck Tent to Protect the Equipment
Weather is the emergency nobody plans for until it rains. In my region, a surprise storm can turn a calm job into a small disaster in ten minutes. That’s why I recommend a truck tent on every truck that carries tools and material to a concrete site.
A truck tent isn’t a permanent shed. It’s a cover that stretches over the bed or the tool area. In August 2024, a fast-moving storm hit us halfway through a concrete repair. We had the Hitachi C12FDH and a crate of wedge anchors sitting in the open bed. We pulled the truck tent over them in less than a minute. When the rain stopped, the tools were dry and we kept going. The crew on the other side of the building didn’t have a cover; they spent the next hour drying out boxes and waiting.

When the last anchor is set and the drill is packed, walk the job like you’re the person paying the invoice. Check for dust on the door thresholds. Pull up any masking tape that’s lost its edge. Take a photo of the finished row of anchors.
The quality of that final walk is the brand. A $50 difference per project in material or an extra 20 minutes of cleanup shows up in client retention. When I switched from budget anchors to name-brand wedge anchors for critical railings, our callbacks dropped. I’m not saying expensive is always better—for a non-critical fence post, a standard anchor is fine. But the choice has to be deliberate, and the client’s first look at the result is the moment they decide if you’re a professional or just a guy with a drill.
Common Mistakes That Cost Time on Concrete Drilling Jobs
Here are the mistakes I see most often when someone calls us to rescue a job:

The checklist doesn’t just save time. It protects your reputation on every site, and that’s the one thing you can’t order overnight.
